More Education Has To Be Taught In Medical School About Pain – It Is Absurd!

Are you aware that medical students are only taught one (1) hour of education concerning pain? This is absurd. Having a Daughter with RSD/CRPS, Which is Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, it is unfortunate how uneducated the medical profession is on this topic and other pain syndromes.

Bringing my daughter to Urgent Care and going over history, they had no idea what RSD was. Poking at the pain site and dismissing it for a muscle pull, is not a muscle pull, it is real and it is being overlooked. having Invisible Pain is a frustrating and very lonely disease, as pain is a disease. Education is key and if the doctors and nurses do not know about it, how can one ever get proper treatment? They simply cannot.

It is time to launch a campaign to have medical professions receive continuing education on pain. It is time for patients to be listened to and heard. It is time that they have been treated as human beings and not a diagnosis. It is past time that the patient is taken seriously and not dismissed that it is all in their head.

Imagine, the wind blowing and having your child scream in pain from something so gentle as the wind, it is horrific at best. Imagine your child or yourselves legs purple and below zero in temperature and you cannot walk. Imagine you go to bed and wake up in pain and the medical community doesn’t believe, or know what to do, it is a lack for sure and a disservice to humanity.

Not everything has cures or remedies, RSD/CRPS, we know does not have a cure, but what we do know is the pain is not proportionate to the injury, touch, or sensation, what we also know is that all too many people are not being properly diagnosed because of lack of education. This has to change and change now.

The story of me, a mom of a young girl who has lost 3.5 years of her life due to the negligence of a waterpark, after receiving chemical burns, at the age of 9 years old, this beautiful girl has been in constant, excruciating pain. No mother should ever feel helpless with their children, but in this case, I am. I cannot rub the pain to make it feel better because my touch hurts too much, I cannot give Tylenol or Motrin to relieve the fever, I cannot make it go away. My only option is to support and really listen and pray that the pain will subside. That is the sad truth, I cannot take it away and the Drs cannot if they do not understand it.

If you or a loved one has had an injury, a burn, or anything that has resulted in pain that has not gone away, that has spread to other parts of your body, do not rule out RSD/CRPS. Do research, get to know your pain, and go to a physician that will listen to you and be proactive. Unfortunately, the sufferers can be the best educators, not the kind they want to be, but in hopes to help others always speak up!

Gentle Hugs!
